It is Hugh Fearnley-whitttingstall's dream to escape the urban sprawl and find a little place in the country where he can live off the fat of the land.

hen he finds River Cottage nestling in the heart of the Dorset countryside he sets about turning his dream into reality. The first casualty to self-sufficiency is beautiful flower bed wihich makes way for terracing designed to maximise growing space for edible crops. Once the vegetables have been taken care of Hugh sets off in his 1965 Ford Corsair in search of livestock.

The first arrivals at the cottage are a pair of eight week old 'Old Spot' pigs but more animals
soon follow.

Hugh also finds time to show how a sumptuous meal or two can be prepared from the local produce be it sea fish, pigeons or a freshly caugh pike.. Channel 4 Records

A Year after leaving the smoke of the city behind him to live off the fat of the land in the country at River Cpttage, Huge Fearnely-Whittingstall has sampled the good life and found it to taste pretty sweet. Now he wants more...

Hugh plans to turn his smallholding into a real home farm and edge a little closer to the holy grail of self-sufficiency. He negotiates with his neighbour to secure the use of a four and a half acre field, just enough to support a cow called Marge and her calf, a steer for beef and some Dorset Down sheep.

The cattle are joined by chickens, which Hugh introduces to highrise living and three 'Spice' pigs which he christens Ginger, Baby and Fat!

There is also time for Hugh to explore some of the local traditions including taking part in the annual nettle eating competition and diving for scallops. Channel 4 Records

The rolling hills and rugged cuntryside of Dorset provide the perfect backdrop for Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's experiment to leave the rat race behind and live off the fat of the land.

Tucked away at the bottom of one of the county's valleys he finds his ideal home: River Cottage.

In his first year Hugh had just the cottage and the garden but he soon found he needed more land so. in his second year, he did a deal with a neighbour to

rent four acres. His smallholding now boats a polytunnel for growing vegetables, fox-proof high rise chicken accommodation and pasture for his sheep, cow and pigs.

It is now the start of the third year and, as well as being a time for looking back with joyu and satisfaction at the events of the last two years, it is a time to ask the really big question: should Huge stay at River Cottage forever?. Channel 4 Records
